Edwin's letters mainly to Kim give detailed, information filled, interesting accounts of camp life in Tennessee and Georgia and refer to engagements at Shiloh, Ringgold, Buzzard's Roost, Rome, Kenesaw Mountain and Atlanta. Also from the hospital with Lu writing to tell Kim of Edwin's wound and amputation. Ira's letters are mainly to his parents but include several to and from "sister Kim" and to "brother". His are equally interesting and detail camp life in Arkansas, Tennessee and Mississippi with references to Vicksburg, Champion Hill and Mission Ridge. His diary, Aug. 18, 1862-Oct. 3, 1863, gives brief daily accounts of activities. Both sets of letters have many references to family news and friends both at home and those serving in the army. Three letters from Isabel T. Clark of Boston portray her active social life and thoughts on it.

Sergeant in the 34th Illinois Infantry from Morrison, Ill. married Cornelia (Kim) Hudson on Feb. 14, 1864, was wounded at Jonesboro, Ga. in Sept. 1864 and after having his arm amputated was discharged from the army. His brother Lucias (Lu) served in the same regiment. His brother Ira T. served as a sergeant in the 93rd Illinois Infantry under his brother Captain William A. Payne. Ira was killed at the battle of Missionary Ridge, November 25, 1863. From the description of Papers, 1861...
